Stop I-3 Coalition to hold
Public information meeting in Clarkesville
The Stop I-3 Coalition is holding a public information meeting
at the Clarkesville library, 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 29,
2006, to update area residents about the organization’s
efforts.
Elizabeth Wells, Executive Director of the coalition, will
make a brief address and respond to questions from the public.
The coalition represents a growing confederation of community
organizations and conservation groups located in the four-state
Appalachian region (see www.StopI-3.org for details,) dedicated
to stopping an unneeded highway that it believes would do
irreparable harm to mountain economies, forests, farms, and
streams, and to rural qualities of life rooted in a strong
sense of place.
The coalition is sponsoring a petition drive, and is working
with local elected officials to take a stand against the ruinous
road that would cut through the mountains of north Georgia
on its way from Savannah to Knoxville. To date, five counties
in north Georgia, and three in western North Carolina, have
taken formal stands against the I-3 corridor.
